LAFAYETTE - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette for Leroy Joseph Gedward, 83, who passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at his residence in Lafayette, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family and loved ones.
Fr. Robert Seay, OFM, of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Lafayette, will officiate.
Private burial services will be held at Fountain Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette.
Leroy was born Wednesday, October 17, 1929 in St. Martinville and was a resident of Lafayette. A proud veteran, Leroy served in the United States Air Force from 1946 to 1950. He met and married the love of his life, Mary Angeline DeBlanc, on April 19, 1958. Employed by Lafayette General Hospital in the surgery department, he retired after 32 years of service. He was also an associate of Beacham Urology for 42 years and continued his work with urologists, Drs. Sam Shuffler and Brad Roth, until the time of his death.
Leroy provided a total of 50 plus years of service to urologic patient care and education. Leroy received specialized training in the field of urology by several of Lafayette's prominent urologists, including Drs. Beacham, Latiolais, Kimbrough, Tolson, Williams, Thibodeaux and Bourque. He was not only a student, but also a teacher. He is best characterized by his beautiful smile to match his fun loving personality, his love of life and people, and his desire to help others. His example inspires multiple generations of both family and co-workers to be better people.
Leroy was active in his community and belonged to St. Paul Catholic Church. He loved life and believed in living life to the fullest. He was an avid cook and enjoyed entertaining and caring for his family. He loved traveling, especially road trips with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Much fun was had by all during family vacations in Florida. He enjoyed beautiful sunny days outside on his swing with his loyal dog, Jake, by his side or in his lap. Leroy was adamant about maintaining an immaculate, aromatic home and a well-manicured yard. His punctuality was beyond measure. He was very "matter of fact" with his favorite quote being "face reality." He was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, comrade and friend and will be deeply missed. His legacy will live forever.
Mr. Gedward is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Angeline (DeBlanc) Gedward of Lafayette; three daughters, Pauletta Gedward-Brown of Lafayette, Loretta Gedward-North (Basil) of Lee's Summit, MO, Angela Gedward-Binford of Stone Mountain, GA; two sons, Kenneth John Gedward of Lafayette, Leroy David Gedward (Dr. Ronda Francis-Gedward) of Stone Mountain, GA; brother, Arthur Gedward, Jr. (Elsie) of St. Martinville; two sisters, Orlean Gedward of St. Martinville and Thelma Smith-Drone (Howard) of Kansas City, MO; eleven grandchildren, LaSantra, Cory, Kodi, Ramsey, Andrea, Alexia, Michelle, Alicia, Arianna, Leah and Lauren; five great-grandchildren, Hali, Jaden, Porshiana, Kodi, Jr. and Layla; and numerous dear nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Gedward, Sr. and Unita Mallery-Gedward, brothers, Robert and Lincoln Gedward, sisters, Mary Ruby Kerlegan and Mary Ann Valsin.
Visitation will be observed at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette on Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. until time of services.
