She is also survived by one brother and three sisters, all of Rayne, Lawrence Guidry and his wife Exalta, Ella Foreman, Marie Broussard, Jeanette Leger and her husband Willie; sisters-in-law, Lillian Guidry of Rayne, Liz Guidry of Houston, Julie Guidry of Broussard, Lerline Guidry of Rayne, and Annie Guidry of Broussard; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eloi and Anne Guidry; husband, Forest J. Blanchard; a step-grandson, Scotty Hargroder; six brothers, Paul Guidry, Dennis Guidry, Harry Guidry, Dr. John Guidry, Gerald Guidry, and Rodney Guidry; and one sister, Julia Guidry.

A native of Rayne, Viola Blanchard was born September 1, 1917, the daughter of Eloi Guidry and Anne Caillier Guidry. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Rayne, married, then became a well-known resident of Scott for over 70 years. After raising her children, Mrs. Blanchard worked for the Louisiana state hospital system. For approximately 15 years, she was employed as a supervisor of housekeeping in the Lafayette Charity Hospital and its Tuberculosis Annex. In retirement, she enjoyed church activities, helping family members and others, and participating in weekly gatherings with friends. She also traveled with the Gloria Mundy Club, family members, and other groups, visiting several foreign countries and nearly all of the states.

She was active in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church community throughout her adult life. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and named Catholic Daughter of the Year for the year 2002. She was also a member of the Ladies Altar Society, maintained Church and sacramental linen for over 10 years, and served for many years on the church committee to count and record weekly collections. An active member of several other service groups, Mrs. Blanchard was honored with the Diocese of Lafayette's Bishop's Medal for Devoted Service and also the Monsignor Sigur Society Service Medal. For many years, she assisted the pastor in visiting the sick and homebound, represented her church community in working weekly at St. Joseph's Diner, and remembered parishioners and special intentions, along with a weekly rosary group and prayer-list committee. She loved the missions, pro-life prayer and support, and contributed to these monetarily and in prayer and action groups. Mrs. Blanchard was very conscious of poverty and other justice issues. She readily worked for humanitarian causes and cared about exercising her voting privileges, recycling, and other environmental conservation. When many ask themselves before possessing something, "Can I use this?" she would ask, "Can I do without this?" Her desire for a simple life, faith-filled, with few possessions was inspirational to family and others who knew her well.

Visiting hours will be Friday, February 7, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to time of the funeral. A rosary will be recited Friday at 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to the Carmelite Monastery at 1250 Carmel Drive, Lafayette, LA 70501 or The Family Missions Company at 12624 Everglade Rd, Abbeville, LA 70510.
