NEW IBERIA - Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 3:00 pm in Delhomme Funeral Home Chapel for LeRoy Francis O'Brien, 76, known affectionately to family as "Sir", who passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Lafayette General Hospital in Lafayette surrounded by his family.

Reverend Steve LeBlanc, Pastor of St. Pius X Catholic Church will conduct the services. Max LaBry, soloist, will sing for the services.

Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette.

LeRoy Francis O'Brien was born on January 18, 1938 in New Iberia, Louisiana. He was a graduate of New Iberia Senior High where he was a 3-time Louisiana High School Golden Gloves State Champion. He attended the University of Houston on a boxing scholarship. In 2013 he was elected into the Louisiana Boxing Hall of Fame. In 1967, he began coaching the Cajun Stars softball team and led them to multiple state and regional championships as well as record wins at national tournaments. He loved fishing, hunting, and the New York Yankees and never missed an opportunity to catch a game. In 2004, after 46 years, he retired as Sales Manager from Mayfair Window Company. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, as evidenced by his constant presence at many family activities. He was also an accomplished woodworker, as well as contractor, on homes for friends and family. A fighter to the end, he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Family meant everything to him and he leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Jeanette Genevieve Mouton O'Brien; four daughters, Cindy O'Brien LaBry (Max) of DeQuincy, Louisiana, Patti O'Brien Roy (John) of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Gingi O'Brien Lockhart (Scott) of Sulphur, Louisiana, Heidi O'Brien D'Amelio, (Marc) of Norwalk, Connecticut; two nieces who he loved as his own children, Norma Laque Schexnailder (Maurice) of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, and Lea Laque Hulin (Faren) of Youngsville, Louisiana; his grandchildren, Shelbi Roy, Spencer Roy, Lukas LaBry, Harli Lockhart, Darbi Lockhart, Dixie D'Amelio and Charli D'Amelio; two sisters, Frances O'Brien Peet (Jim) and Suzette O'Brien Lussen (Todd); and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by Lee and Vida O'Brien.

Pallbearers will be Marc D'Amelio, Lukas LaBry, Max LaBry, Scott Lockhart, John Roy, and Spencer Roy. Honorary pallbearers are Herman "T-Boy" Landry and Rob Richard. The family requests that visitation be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home Bertrand Drive location on Monday, April 21, 2014 from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm A Rosary will be recited on Monday at 7:00 pm in the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 from 10:00 am until time of services.
