LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Bernice Filer Bernard. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Bernice Filer Bernard was born May 11, 1918 in St. Martin Parish, LA to the late Halphen and Mable Bazile Filer. She departed her earthly life on May 12, 2014 at the age of 96.
Bernice was a faithful member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for over 60 years. She dedicated many years working diligently for her church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters and was an Extraordinary Minister and Lector.
In 1936, she married the late Fred Bernard. To this union 5 children were born.
Bernice was a strong and determined woman who believed in the power of prayer. Praying was something she did constantly. She came from a line of excellent cooks. She was one of the best Sweet Dough Pie makers in South East LA. She worked the festival circuit for many years selling her delicious pies, pecan candy, peanut brittle and peanut butter fudge. She did this for so many years that she became affectionately known as the "Pie Lady". For over 25 years she was a constant presence at the Omelet Festival in Abbeville, LA. She looked forward to doing this festival every November. Her helpers were daughter Paulette and Paulette's late husband Anthony. In later years her son Mark and his wife Helen helped also.
She leaves to remember her life on this earth her daughters, Beverly Ann Bernard Dennis of Houston, TX, Barbara Louise Bernard Johnson of Lafayette, LA, Betty Lou Bernard Polk (Donnell) of Port Arthur, TX, Paulette Bernard Washington of Lafayette, LA, Acquinettea Joy Bernard of Lafayette, LA, and her son, Fred Mark Bernard (Helen) of Houston, TX; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
She also leaves to remember her life her extended family for whom she worked for 53 years, Martha Green of Virginia and Martha's childre, Zopher Green of Chico, California, Shannon Green of Virginia, Louise Green Bergeron of Houston, TX and Pierce Green of Austin, TX.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son-n- law, parents, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.
The family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Heart of Hospice, Karen Nelson and Julie.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Syrie Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume Friday at 7:00 a.m. until time of service.
