Gertrude Waterbury Obituary
Gertrude "Trudy" Flesner Waterbury

August 12, 1923 ~ May 14, 2014

CROWLEY - "I am grateful for…" were words that started each and every day for Trudy, who appreciated all the gifts and beauty that God provided to the world; even in the simplest of forms like delicate blades of green grass or a spectacular sunset. Smiles and laughs came easy for her, words of encouragement were free-flowing, and a helping hand for anyone in need was readily available. Trudy loved travel, adventure, spending time friends, and playing bridge. She was a devout and life-long student of the Bible, and above all, loved God and her family. Her life was devoted to her family; Tricia Waterbury Seaborn (deceased), Rebecca Waterbury of Diamondhead, MS, Janine Waterbury Rozas and husband Glenn of Opelousas, LA, Meda Waterbury Payne and husband Paul of Southlake, Texas, Lisa Waterbury (deceased), and Dawna Waterbury of Lafayette, LA. Her face lit up in the presence of her grandchildren; Alecia Leblanc and husband Todd of Youngsville, LA, Jessica Huckaby and husband Lee of Columbus, MS, Angela Guillory and husband Ted, Jr., of Opelousas, LA, Rachael Hodges and husband Jeremiah, of Cypress, TX, Christina Pritt and husband Todd, of Opelousas, LA, Erin Carter and husband Adam of Opelousas,LA, and twins Chelsea and Alayna Payne of Southlake, TX and her 13 great grandchildren.

Trudy grew up in Rantoul, Illinois, attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio and Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina before she married William Benson Waterbury, who preceded her in death in 1975. Trudy was also preceded in death by her two daughters Tricia and Lisa, her parents H.J. and Anna Flesner of Rantoul, IL, and all of her 6 siblings; John Flesner, Hannah Crane, Mildred Ogle, Annetta Douglas, Verna Fuller , and Elmer Flesner.

In her last days Trudy was particularly grateful for the tremendous care that she received from Lisa Robertson, who helped her cheer her favorite sports teams to victory, Priscilla Portalis, who always brought a smile to her face and took her on adventures, Maria Young, who was filled with compassion and always provided a comforting hand, and last, but not least, Katherine and Theresa. Trudy was above all grateful for the love, devotion, and comfort of her family and we will be eternally grateful for her.

Trudy "went home" peacefully on May 14th and her wishes were to have a simple departure from this world. There will be a one hour visitation on Saturday, May 17th starting at 10:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Crowley, LA located at 121 West 8th Street, LA with funeral services immediately following at 11:00 a.m. at the Church. A family interment at Myrtle Grove Cemetery in Opelousas, LA will follow the services. Pallbearers for Trudy are: Paul Payne, Glenn Rozas, Todd LeBlanc, Ted Guillory, Jr., Lee Huckaby, and Jeremiah Hodges. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the First Lutheran Church Building Fund: P.O. Box 1446 Crowley, LA 70527-1446, to assist with the on-going preservation of the historical Church.
