Lafayette - Candace Jean Hawkins, 62, passed away peacefully among friends and family in her home in Arlington, Texas on Friday, May 23. Candace was born in Fairfax, Missouri, attended elementary school in Brussels, Belgium and high school in upstate New York. She graduated from LSU in 1969 with degrees in French and Spanish. Upon graduation, she moved to Atlanta where she met her husband Mike and they soon after moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they were married and their daughter Taylor was born. After living in Lafayette for three years, the family moved to Arlington where they resided until her passing. Candace battled appendiceal cancer for four years before her Lord called her home for her rest and her peace. Her amazing strength affected everyone who knew her. Always uplifting, constantly positive, and courageous beyond understanding, Candace will be remembered for her smile, her warmth, and her compassion and concern for others even as she fought daily to live for one more day.
Survivors include her husband Mike, daughter Taylor, stepson Michael, and step-grandsons Mathew and Andrew Baxter.
A celebration of her remarkable life will be held at the home of her mother-in-law Eleanor Hawkins, 802 Alonda Drive in Lafayette from 3PM until 8PM on Saturday May 31. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, hug someone you love every day.
