CANKTON - Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14, 2014 at a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Berchmans Catholic Church in Cankton for Amelia G. Henry, age 90, the former Amelia Guidry, who passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014 at her residence in Sunset.
Interment will be in St. John Berchmans Cemetery in Cankton. The Rev. Msgr. Russell Harrington, pastor of St. John Berchmans Catholic Church, will officiate at the services.
On January 12, 1924, Amelia Guidry was born in Sunset, LA to Spencer Guidry, Sr. and the former, Bernadette Thomas. Mrs. Henry was a native and lifelong resident of the Sunset/Cankton community. She retired from St. Landry Parish School Board with seventeen years of service. Mrs. Henry was an excellent seamstress, hairdresser, cook and homemaker. She was a parishioner of St. John Berchmans Catholic Church in Cankton and a member of the Ladies Altar Society. Mrs. Henry loved making quilts and jigsaw puzzles.
Survivors include seven sons, Gerald Henry and his wife, Elsie, of Atlanta, GA, Harold Henry and his wife, Eva, of Church Point, John Henry and his wife, Elizabeth, of Lafayette, Alvin C. Henry of Sugar Land, TX, Larry Henry and his wife, Abbie, of Spring, TX, Wilson Henry and his wife, Karen, of Houston, TX and Nelson Henry of Sunset; five daughters, Dolores Henry Sampy and her husband, Leroy, of Carencro, Bernadette Henry Blair and her husband, Willie Rufus, of Missouri City, TX, Willa Mae Henry Harris and her husband, Rev. Randall, of Houston, TX, Norma Henry of Opelousas and Priscilla Henry Carter and her husband, Harold Lee, of Sunset; forty four grandchildren; eighty four great grandchildren; seven great, great grandchildren; two brothers, Spencer Guidry, Jr. and Ashton Guidry, both of Sunset; and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years, Joseph V.H. Henry; two sons, Marvin Chris Henry and Edward James Henry; her parents, Spencer Guidry, Sr. and the former, Bernadette Thomas, both natives of Sunset; three brothers, Melvin Briscoe, Rodney Guidry and Eddie Guidry; and one sister, Isabelle Guidry.
A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Friday and will continue from 7:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Randy Daigle, Dr. Wade May, the members and staff of Paramount Hospice, AAA Home Health, Ageless Home Health and especially Brenda Duplichan her caretaker.
