ST. MARTINVILLE - A Celebration of Life honoring Edmund "Ed" Thomas Geer will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at his home on Henry Dore Road, in St. Martinville, Louisiana.
Born on March 26, 1940, in the town of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, Ed peacefully passed into his new life the night of July 18, 2014. He served his country in the United States Navy from October 2, 1957 until he was honorably discharged on October 1, 1963. His career path included positions in accounting and sales. It was his career in sales that brought Ed to Louisiana in the early 1980's. He endeared the Cajun lifestyle and made Acadiana his home until his death. Ed's favorite pastime was fishing. From a young boy fishing in the streams and creeks around his hometown to a retired gentleman fishing the ponds of Catfish Heaven and sharing his secret of fishing success with young people, Ed was always the one who "had all the luck." The secret to his luck - the bigger the bait, the bigger the fish!!! Ed was an avid fan and faithful follower of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots and came to love the New Orleans Saints as much as any other "Who Dat Nation" fan. He enjoyed spending time at UL Men's basketball games. Ed was also a past member of the Rotary Club.
Ed is survived by his wife of twelve years, Rose Sonnier Geer; his sons, Gary Geer and his family, David Geer and his daughter, and Peter Geer; his step-son, John Shankles and his daughter; his sisters, Jeanne Robinson and her husband, Frank, and Donna Dunn; his brother, Paul Geer; his sister-in-law, Bernice Geer; his father and mother-in-law, Alex and Janell Sonnier; his wife's siblings, Julie Breaux, Angie Verret, James Sonnier, Michael Sonnier and Patrick Sonnier and their families; the mother of his sons, Constance "Connie" Murphy; many nieces and nephews; his friend in Massachusetts, Robert "Bob" Platt; his Cajun best friend, Sammy Fontenot; and his beloved dogs, Max and Jake.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Simone Trottier Geer; his twin brother, Richard "Butch" Geer; his brother, Gerry Geer; his brother-in-law, Dan Dunn; and his second wife, Katherine Geer.
As per his final wishes, Ed donated his body to the Tulane University School of Medicine for research and educational purposes.
The family of Edmund Geer would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Acadiana for their care and dedication to Ed as he walked the path into his new life and requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St., Suite 200, Lafayette, LA. 70503-3240
