Dorothy Glasscock Obituary

Dorothy Glasscock

LAFAYETTE - Dorothy Freeze Glasscock passed away peacefully at her home, Saturday, September 24, 2011. A private service is planned with entombment in the Lafayette Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Reverend Richard Humphries, Senior Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, will officiate. Dorothy Freeze Glasscock was born in Emory, Texas, August 13, 1910, to Columbus Freeze and Gertrude Flewellen Freeze. She was the youngest of seven children. Involved and highly ranked in competitive debate during her high school years, she pursued that interest in college. In 1931, Mrs. Glasscock graduated from Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman's University), Denton, Texas, with a Bachelor of Science in speech. She continued her studies in speech and drama with graduate work at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. After returning to Texas, while teaching school in Gladewater, she met her husband, the late Charles William Glasscock. In the late 1930's, Mr. and Mrs. Glasscock moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where they resided for more than forty years. In Shreveport Mr. Glasscock was active in business, and they reared their three children.

Mrs. Glasscock continued to enjoy her interest in drama, poetry, and literature. She was involved in productions of the Shreveport Little Theater, often with leading roles. Always an avid reader, Mrs. Glasscock was well known for her book reviews and dramatic readings. The perpetual student, she enjoyed studying French at Centenary College for a number of years. She became quite fluent and developed a true love of the French language and thus expanded her choices of literature and poetry.

As a young, single school teacher, age 24, Dorothy embarked upon a journey abroad which solidified her lifelong love of travel. Whether delightful family vacations to the western United States, at times with husband Charles as their pilot, or to exotic, distant lands, Mrs. Glasscock remained an astute and inquisitive traveler. She possessed a keen interest in politics, international relations and events of the world at large, which she followed with great enthusiasm.

Her dignity, quiet strength, and sweet and gentle spirit will be remembered always with great thanksgiving. She was a dear and attentive mother who was a wonderful example of kindness and contentment.

Mr. and Mrs. Glasscock moved to Lafayette, Louisiana, in the late 1970's. Mrs. Glasscock has spent the last several years living comfortably at home. Her family is appreciative of her neighbors who regularly passed by while walking, jogging or biking and thoughtfully offered a smile, wave, or tip of the hat. These kind gestures always brightened her days.

Mrs. Glasscock was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Glasscock; her parents, Columbus Freeze and Gertrude Flewellen Freeze; two brothers, James Freeze and Hugh Freeze; and four sisters, Faye Rabb, Jess Wallace, Maud Freeze, and Mildred Freeze.

She is survived by one daughter, Ann Glasscock Dupree and her husband, Dr. Gene O. Dupree, of Lafayette, Louisiana; two sons, Charles William Glasscock, Jr. of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Robert Edward Glasscock of Hunt, Texas; five grandchildren, David S. Fitzgerald and his wife, Kelley, of Kaneohe, Hawaii; Charles G. Fitzgerald and his wife, Jeanne, of Lafayette, Louisiana; Frances Ainsley Fitzgerald Babin and her husband, Brent, of Houston, Texas; Robert E. Glasscock, Jr. of Houston, Texas; and Robson C. Glasscock of Richmond, Virginia. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Grace Ann and Emily Jane Fitzgerald of Kaneohe, Hawaii; and Charles Patrick, John Henry, and Annalise Marie Fitzgerald of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Mrs. Glasscock's latter years were pleasant and comfortable due, in large part, to her excellent caregivers who consistently provided her with gentle and loving care. Her family holds them in utmost regard. They are Patricia Mouton, Veronica Randall, Racquel Foster, Gelenther Broussard, Dinelle Thomas, Roslyn Smith, and Sara Caesar.

Mrs. Glasscock's family wishes to acknowledge and thank the entire staff of Heart of Hospice for their exceptional care and guidance during these last months.
