LAFAYETTE - Joseph Theodore (Ted) Brierre, Jr., M.D. died at his home on November 1st, 2012. Ted was born in New Orleans, La on October 21st, 1935 and was married to the late Irene Discon Brierre in 1957. They lived together in Lafayette, La for more than 40 years.
Ted graduated from De La Salle high school in 1953, Tulane University in 1956, and LSU School of Medicine in 1960. He then proudly served in the Navy while completing his residency in Bethesda, Md. Ted went on to serve as the Director of Laboratories and Clinical Research at the Naval Aerospace Research Institute in Pensacola, Fl. After completing his military service, Ted settled in Lafayette where he became Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Director of the Laboratory at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital until his retirement in 1995.
Ted received numerous honors and awards throughout his career. Ted was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Societies. Ted was named the Outstanding Senior of his Medical School class. He was a proud Adjunct Professor for the University of Southwestern Louisiana and served as a mentor for numerous pre-medical students. Ted served as the President of the Lafayette Parish Medical Society and was recognized by numerous institutions and societies for his commitment and dedication. He was a leader in the local medical community until he suffered a stroke in 1982, serving as a board member or officer in the Southwest Louisiana Education and Referral Center, the Lafayette Epilepsy Chapter of Louisiana, the Acadiana Community Mental Health Center, among others.
Ted's talents went far beyond the practice of medicine. He was an enthusiastic fisherman for many years. He was gifted in many ways, including photography, drawing, and woodworking. Ted was an avid reader of history and enjoyed traveling with his family and friends. He enjoyed the game of tennis and was integral in supporting the athletes of the University of Southwestern Louisiana's tennis team for many years.
Even greater than his commitment to his community and career was his love for his family. He was a devoted husband and kindhearted father and grandfather. Words cannot express the gratitude of his children, as well as the many persons within our community whom he supported and encouraged throughout the years.
Ted is survived by one daughter, Kathy Brierre Navel and her husband, Keith; three sons, Joseph Eugene Brierre, M.D., Paul Glenn Brierre and his wife, Alisa and Stephen Patrick Brierre, M.D. and his wife, Kathryn; two siblings, Kathleen Burney and Mary Michael Willoz; and eight grandchildren.
