Robert Millard Dugas, Sr.

LAFAYETTE - September 4, 1921 - January 26, 2013

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at 1:30 PM in St. Jules Catholic Church in Lafayette, for Robert Millard Dugas, Sr., age 91, who died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Saturday, January 26, 2013.

Reverend Arthur Warren, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Entombment will take place in Calvary Mausoleum, 355 Teurlings Dr. in Lafayette.

Mr. Dugas was a native of Paincourtville, Louisiana and graduated from Catholic High of Donaldsonville in 1940 and from SLI (now ULL) in 1948. He was an avid golfer and supporter of UL sports, attending home football games for many years. A veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, he served in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, First Class, aboard the USS Card and USS Shangri La.

He was a resident of Lafayette since 1962. He retired from Industrial Screw and Supply Co. as Partner - Owner. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4683, American Legion, VFW, and the Serra Club of Lafayette. In the Serra Club, he served as President and District Governor. In 1996, he instituted the Vocation Chalice at St. Jules in the hopes of encouraging vocations; the service of the chalice remains uninterrupted. Mr. Dugas was a recipient of the Bishop's Medal and a member of the Carmelite Guild.

Mr. Dugas is survived by his wife of sixty four years, Shirley Smith Dugas; his six children, Robert Dugas and wife Christine Snell Dugas, Eunice Dugas Bannon and husband Michael, Christine Dugas Landry, Edward Dugas and wife Elena Begnaud Dugas, Bill Dugas and wife Anne Brabant Dugas and Mary George Dugas; sister in law, Evelyn Aleman Dugas; his ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, especially Lyall and Celeste Scott, who all enjoyed years of family fish fries and crawfish boils with him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean X. and Eunice Poche Dugas; and brothers, Wilton and J.P. Dugas.

Pallbearers will include Mr. Dugas' grandsons, Todd Dugas, Gerad Dugas, Matthew Bannon, Nicolas Dugas; and great nephews, Joshua Scott, Isaac Scott and Patrick Scott.

Special thanks go to Dr. Hector Robles, Concepts of Care, Hospice of Acadiana, and Mel's Hearts of Gold, especially Niecey Hebert.

The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Lafayette location on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until time of service. A Rosary will be prayed by the Knights of Columbus on Monday at 6:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home.
