CARENCRO - Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 29, 2013 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Carencro for Walter Ray Sampy, age 71, who passed away Friday, June 21, 2013 at 5:33 p.m. at his residence in Carencro.
Interment will be in Our Lady of Assumption Cemetery in Carencro. The Rev. Peter Emusa, pastor of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, will officiate at the services. Readers will be Devlin Quinn Sampy and Briana Sedonia Sampy. Giftbearers will be Katlin Sampy and Jaden Sanders. Responsorial Psalm will be by Mary Ames.
Music will be provided by Francis LeBlanc.
Mr. Sampy was a native and lifelong resident of Carencro. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Carencro. He was an employed Chef with Lafayette Petroleum Club for over twenty-seven years and retired as a Sergeant with L.P.S.O. with twenty years of service. He was a professional chef with over 40 years culinary experience. He accomplished the difficult task of teaching inmate workers with little or no experience. He molded inmates into bakers, cooks, pantry/inventory control workers as well as modified diet cooks. His teaching was done while coordinating other food service tasks--serving almost one million meals/year while battling diabetes and receiving dialysis 3 days/week after his eight hour shift.
Survivors include his wife of forty seven years, Josephine Henry Sampy of Carencro; three sons, Ryan Avery Sampy of Carencro, Chad Ray Sampy and his wife, Marie, of Scott and Devlin Quinn Sampy and his fiancée, Liza Granger, of Lafayette; one daughter, Troy Sampy Aubrey and her husband, John Kevin, of Lafayette; one daughter-in-law, Charlene Hawthorne Sampy of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; nine grandchildren, Taylor Aubrey, Tonya Aubrey, Devin Sampy and his wife, Marie, Kaitlin Sampy, Saige Duhon, Briana Sampy, Victoria Wulf, Courtney Breaux and Carmela Hawthorne; three great grandchildren, Kinsley Aubrey, Jayden Sampy and Kayliph Chambers; two brothers, David Sampy, Sr. of Hyattsville, MD, and Kim Sampy and his wife, Shirley, of Carencro; one sister, Cynthia Sampy Broussard and her husband, Ronelle, of Lafayette; six sister-in-laws, Wanda Sampy of Lanham, MD, Clara Ames and her husband Charles, Catherine Guidry and her husband Cleveland, Barbara Henry, all of Houston, TX. Jacqueline Walker and her husband Oliver, and Sheila Henry, all of Cankton; two brother-in-laws, Marshall Henry of Houston, TX, and Donald James Henry and his companion, Jean Victorian, of Sunset.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy Sampy and the former, Hazel Mercier, both natives of Carencro; and an infant brother, Ray Allen Sampy.
A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Friday and will continue from 8:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Avery Sampy, Chad Ray Sampy, Devlin Quinn Sampy, Devin Ray Sampy, David Sampy, Sr. and Amos Batiste.
