Trula Wells Russek

LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM on Thursday, September 12, 2013 in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension for Trula Wells Russek, age 92, who died on September 6, 2013 at her home. The Rev. Joseph Daly will officiate. Burial will follow on Friday in Columbus, Texas.

Trula was born February 27, 1921 in Brenham, Texas and grew up in Columbus, Texas. She is a graduate of the University of Texas. Married to I.W. Russek for 51 years, they lived in Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana before settling in Lafayette in 1963.

Trula played a large part in the establishment of the Republican Party in Louisiana. She has headed campaign offices, was selected as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1968, 1972 and 1976, and served as State President of the Louisiana Federation of the Republican Women. In 1969 Mrs. Russek was selected as LFRW Woman of the Year and then first runner up to the National Republican Woman of the Year.

She has served as President of the Lafayette Geological Auxiliary, the Lafayette Geophysical Auxiliary and L'Heure d'Amitie. She has served on LAGCOE committees, the Acadiana Arts Council, Lafayette Centennial Commission, Pink Ladies of Lafayette General Hospital and was Treasurer of the Lafayette Parish Heart Council for many years. She is a past regent of the Galvez Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, past State Regent of the Daughters of the American Colonists and currently serves as Chapter Regent of the Major Richard Treat Chapter of DAC. She has also served as State Regent of the Louisiana Society of Southern Dames of America.

A long time member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Trula has served in numerous parish and diocesan capacities. She also served two terms as a member of the Board of the Episcopal School of Acadiana.

Trula is a member of the Krewe of the Troubadours, a charter member on the Krewe of Attakapas, the Petroleum Club of Lafayette and Oakbourne Country Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Myra Russek Tener, her granddaughter Trula Tener of Washington, D.C., grandsons Tom Tener and wife Dianne of Allen, Texas and Bill Tener and wife Amy of Arlington, Virginia and great-grandson Kyle Tener of Allen, Texas.

She was predeceased by her husband, I. W. Russek, parents Robert and Trula Harbert Wells, sisters, Ann Wells Duncan and Carolyn Alvey Wells, and brother, Robert R. Wells, Jr.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 and will continue on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Location.
