Anthony "Tony" Burkhalter
JENNINGS - The family and friends of Anthony "Tony" Burkhalter are mourning the loss of their loved one who was called from this life on November 13, 2013 at the age of 53. Anthony, known to his family and friends as "Tony", was born in Ferriday, LA to Laverne Burkhalter and Josephine Balance Burkhalter on May 27, 1960. He served his country honorably in the United States Army. He was awarded the Army Achievement Medal on August 28, 1984 for exceptionally meritorious service during the period 17 June 1983 to 25 August 1984 while serving as the Unit Tactical Communications Systems Operator/Mechanic for the 1097th Transportation Company (Medium Boat). Corporal Burkhalter's technical expertise in communications equipment trouble-shooting and repair has been invaluable to the ongoing mission of the Unit. His professionalism and resourcefulness displayed the highest standards of devotion to military duty. His dedication sense of responsibility and genuine interest in his work has served as an example for his peers to follow. Corporal Anthony B. Burkhalter's outstanding performance of duty reflects great credit upon himself, the 193rd Infantry Brigade (Panama), and the United States Army. "Waterborne"! Following his military service, Anthony worked in the oilfield for 20 years. He worked as a directional driller for Ramco Direct Drilling. He enjoyed cooking for his family and friends, fishing, fast cars, and guns. He also loved his four dogs. Anthony was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Anthony is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Madonna Romero Burkhalter of Jennings; his mother and step father, Josephine and Stephen Howard of Sunset; his three sons, Jeremy Brewer (Nikie) of Mississippi, Joseph Drummer of Ferriday, and Kim Romero of Kinder; two daughters, Heather Istre Hebert (Ronald) of Lake Arthur and Kelly Romero of Kinder; one sister, Pamela Royle (Terry) of Roanoke; his six grandchildren, Jewel Drummer, Justice Drummer, Marinda Brewer, Dylan Brewer, Brooklyn Hebert, and John Anthony Hebert; a nephew, Zackary Royle of Illesheim, Germany; and numerous friends that he held dear to his heart.
Anthony was preceded in death by his father, Laverne Burkhalter.
Funeral services to honor Anthony's life will be held at the Evangelist Center Church located at 303 West Division St. in Jennings, LA on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Gordon St. Germaine officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery where he will be honored with full military rites. Visitation will be held at Matthews & Son Funeral Home in Jennings on Thursday, November 14th from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM and resume on Friday at 8:30 AM until the time of his funeral service.
