LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held Friday, July 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Progressive Baptist Church for Edna Belle Gatson Gray who departed this life on July 14, 2014 at her residence.

Interment will be in Fountain Memorial Cemetery.

Edna Belle Gatson Gray was born in Crowley, Louisiana on June 29, 1932 to Hattie Ford and Rev. William Gatson. She was a graduate of Ross High School and Grambling University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and later received a Master's Degree in Library Science from Louisiana State University.

On December 31, 1955, Edna married the love of her life, Leander Gray III. It was God's blessing that he saw fit to give this couple a wonderful son, Alfredo William Gray.

Edna started her professional career as a first grade teacher in St. Martin Parish. She later served as librarian at Acadiana High School until her retirement from the Lafayette Parish School System. After retirement she worked as a librarian at Remington College for a short while.

Edna was a faithful member of Progressive Baptist Church. She served in numerous capacities including the Progressive Inspirational Choir, the Sanctuary Choir, Circle of Wisdom, New Members Ministry, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Worker, Deborah Circle of the Mission Department and other areas where needed.

Edna was a life member of Grambling State University Alumni Chapter, Ross High Alumni Chapter and Lafayette Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

A loving wife and mother, Edna leaves to cherish and embrace her memories, her husband, Leander Gray III; her son, Alfredo William Gray of Lafayette, LA; one sister, Annie Ruth Akers of Los Angeles, CA; six nephews, Clyde (Linda) Berry of Moreno Valley, CA, Donald Berry of Los Angeles, CA, Kevin (Chanda) Berry of Kingswood, TX, Edward (Hazel) Berry of Houston, TX, Alfred C. Berry of Round Rock, TX and Arthur Berry of Beaumont, TX; seven nieces, Vera Berry of Dallas, TX, Adrienne Berry Guillory of Beaumont, TX and Freddie Ruth (John) Grier, Jackie (Carl) Davis, Nancy Herbert, all of Los Angeles, CA, Loretta McDuffie of St. Louis, MO and Jeanetta Holmes of Atlanta, GA; one sister-in-law, Jean (Sherman) Dyer of Baker, LA; one God Child, Vannessa (Charles) Nickson of Hurst, TX and her friends of 59 plus years, Audrey and Clifton Simon of Hurst, TX. She is also survived by two great nieces, Josie Abrams and Arelia Raenette Sanders of San Francisco, CA and step sisters, Dorothy, Leola and Rose of Oakland, CA. She will be dearly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Edna was preceded in death by her mother, Hattie Ford; her father, Rev. William Gatson; brothers, Earl Holmes and A. C. Berry and stepmother, Angel Lee Gatson.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 25, 2014 at Progressive Baptist Church from 7:00 a.m. until time of service.
