Norman Sellers Obituary

Major Norman Galen (Bud) Sellers, son of the late Newville and Olive Sellers, born in Orbisonia, Pennsylvania May 26, 1920, fought his final campaign at his home on August 22, 2013. Norman began his military career when he enlisted as a private in January 1939 and was first stationed in Puerto Rico but was sent to Europe when the U. S entered WW II. He served as a combat Medic with company B 309 Medical Battalion the 84th Infantry Division. His division participated in three major campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge, an offence that facilitated the turning point in the Allied mission. After the war he joined his wife Shirley in the City of New Orleans. He was called to active duty to join the 980th Field Artillery 40th Infantry Division in the Korean War and served as a forward observer and Battery commander; the division participated in three major campaigns. He continued his military career and had various assignments both in the U. S. and Germany. He retired in 1965. He served his country with the 4th Infantry Division in Pleiku Vietnam as a Field Director with the Red Cross during the 1968 TET Offensive. During his military career he received the following awards and decorations, The Bronze Star Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, European Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal with three campaign stars, United Nations' Korean Service Medal, Nationa Defense Service Medal for Korea, American Occupation Medal for Germany, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Medics Badge and the Army Certificate of Achievement. After his retirement from the Military he worked for the state of Louisiana serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Emergency Preparedness. During this time he wrote and published, "The State of Louisiana's Emergency Operations Plan for Disaster." He was the Governor's authorized representative during major disasters in the state. After retirement from the state he continued to work as a disaster reservist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. His education included Tulane University in New Orleans, Maryland University in Germany, Texas University in El Paso, Field Artillery basic Officers school in Fort Sill Oklahoma, Artillery and Missile School at Fort Bliss, Head Quarters U.S. Army School for counter insurgency. He was a life member of the 84th Infantry Division of the Railsplitters Society, the Disabled American Veterans, the National Military Officers Association, the American Legion Post 518 Orbisonia, Pennsylvania, Washington Artillery Veterans Association in New Orleans, Charter member and past President of the Greater Baton Rouge Area Military Officers Association, Member and past Exalted Ruler and District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of Baton Rouge Elks Lodge #490 and member of the Veterans of the Battle Of the Bulge. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley, daughter of the late Victor and Agnes Cerise, his son Norman Galen Sellers Jr., daughter Suzette Agnes (Sellers) Edmundson and her husband Patrick Edmundson, son Devereaux (Rusty) Eugene Sellers and his wife Gail. His grandchildren: Karina J. (Sellers) Shipps and her husband Clay, Norman Sellers III. James M. Sellers and his wife Stacy, Natasha A. and her husband Shane Johnson, Tanya So, Dominique So and his wife Whitney, Devereaux Eugene Sellers II, and his wife Madelie, Ory Sellers and his wife Tiffany, Alicia-Gail and her husband Mathew Rhoads, and 10 Great Grandchildren. The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice for helping us understand and accept the final weeks of his life. We would like to specifically thank Tina, his nurse. Thank you, Tina :). There will be a viewing at Rabenhorst East on Florida Blvd. Sunday, August 25, 2013 from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. A Graveside Service with Full Military Honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers please donate to your preferred charity in his name.
