Wall, Vera Estelle Smith
Our beloved mother and "MawMaw", Vera Estelle Smith Wall, age 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice in Baton Rouge, LA. Born April 29, 1924, in Amite County, MS, Estelle was the daughter of Robert Talmage and Katie Lucille VanNorman Smith, both deceased. A strong and independent young lady she married her sweetheart, Alfred Denman "Pete" Wall, Sr. at the young age of 16 and remained by his side as his devoted wife "Stell" for 69 years before his death in 2009. In the early years while she and Pete lived in Baton Rouge, Stell was determined to complete her education and received her GED from Glen Oaks High School. Although she worked outside the home for a short time, Stell's true gift was her love of family and simple sense of humor as the quiet balance to Pete's boisterous personality. She taught her children to live with the same values they grew up with, love and respect for family, hard work, no complaints and to always treat others with kindness and respect. After their children were grown, Pete built the "camp" in Liberty, MS, and Stell transformed it to the cozy home on the hill surrounded by her favorite flowers, family pictures and PawPaw Pete's favorite classic car pictures hanging everywhere. With Pete and friends playing music for impromptu parties and cousins and neighbors coming and going always, Stell did her part by maintaining a welcoming home for everyone to enjoy. As her health began to decline, Stell's favorite pastime became sitting quietly in her rocking chair on the breezeway watching Linda, Dennie or Gary working around the property. In the last few years she moved back to Baton Rouge to stay with her children and always tried to do what she could to make things easier for them, never wanting to be a bother. Constantly surrounded by her family, children, grand and great grandchildren, Stell remained a true example of pride and determination who kept everyone smiling even at her 91st birthday just 3 weeks before her death. In her final few days, Stell's caregivers included her family and the wonderful staff at Williamsburg and The Carpenter House. The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation for their compassionate care. Preceded in death by her sisters Doris Smith Tumey and Evelyn "Sheby" Smith Jones, brother R.T. Smith, daughter Karen Lucille "Kay" Wall Barbay Pritchard and husband Pete Wall, Stell is survived by her brother Earl Wade "Punk" Smith, two sons and daughters-in-law, Alfred Denman "Dennie" Wall, Jr. and JoAnn Brister Wall and Gary Lynn Wall and Helene Kaiser Wall, one daughter and son-in-law, Linda Wall Lott and Lawson Lott, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation is Friday, May 22, 2015, at Bethel Baptist Church, 2153 Bethel Rd, Liberty, MS 39645 from 10:00 a.m. until the service begins at 12:00 noon. Burial immediately following at Bethel Cemetery. Pallbearers include Chad Lott, Matt Wall, Benton Wall, Dennie Wall, Jeff Barbay and Rob Smith. In lieu of flowers Stell would have wanted donations sent to The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice.
