He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and was currently living in Moss Bluff. He attended Indiana University and majored in English. After college he served in the Air Force from September of 1967 to September of 1971. During his military service career he was an Armed Forces News Journalist, serving in the Vietnam Conflict stationed in Thailand. Upon his discharge from the military he continued to work in journalism in New Mexico, Beaumont, TX, Lake Charles, LA, Evansville, IN and most recently in Baton Rouge, LA. He was best known for his Tumey's Travels Feature where he traversed the Bayou Back Roads sharing the often unique and always entertaining stories of the area he had grown to love. He was frequently awarded over the course of his career both on the national and state level, among the honors he received was the coveted Iris Award from the National Association of Television Program Executives as well as numerous Associate Press awards. He is survived by his son, Christopher Tumey and wife, Alisha of Moss Bluff; brother, Charles James Tumey of Rogers, Arkansas; sisters, Betty and Joanne; grandson, Gibson Rhys Tumey. His memorial service will be 7pm, Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Visitation will begin 5pm-7pm.
