Retired school teacher, resident of Baton Rouge and native of St. Martinville, she passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012 at her home. She was 93. Visitation will be Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., and Friday, November. 9, 2012, 9:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Greenoaks Memorial Park Mausoleum. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Eileen A. Hutchinson and husband Geoffrey, of Portland, Ore., and Carole A. and Charles Zellner, of Taylors, S.C.; five sons and daughters-in-law, Louis L. Abshire and wife Julie, of Baton Rouge, Stephen J. Abshire and wife Shari, of Baton Rouge, David R. Abshire, of S. Daytona Beach, Fla., Paul J. Abshire, of Baton Rouge, and Michael E. Abshire and wife Lori, of Baton Rouge; sister, Gertrude M. Maraist, of Lafayette; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, Lionel H. Abshire; parents, Ubald and Gabrielle Ducrest Melancon; four brothers, Lawrence Melancon, Joe Melancon, James R. Melancon, Sr., and Fred Melancon. Pallbearers will be Louis L. Abshire, Stephen J. Abshire, David R. Abshire, Paul J. Abshire, and Michael E. Abshire. She graduated from USL in Lafayette with a masters degree in French, retired school teacher of French and English, 25 year member of Catholic Daughters Association Court Regina Coeli #2063, active in Kaycee Auxiliary, longtime volunteer for Catholic Deaf Center, and was dedicated to her family.
