Following an 18 month battle with liver cancer, on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, Betty Dean passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her parents; Samuel Kidd Platt and Evelyn Hale Alexander Platt; siblings Monroe, Thelma, and Harold Platt; and husband Robert Lee Lawrence. She is survived by her sons Robert Dean Lawrence and Harold Alexander Lawrence; daughter-in-law Rhonda Ann Lawrence; grandchildren - Heather Elaine Lawrence Bayer (and husband Nick), Hunter Alexander Lawrence, and Houston Tyler Lawrence; sister-in-law Medith Lawrence Porter; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and family friends, education colleagues, and former students. Betty Dean was proud to be a native of Baton Rouge, having been born here on March 8, 1931. She graduated from Istrouma High School at age 16 and from LSU at age 19. She taught in the East Baton Rouge Public Schools for 30 years at Baton Rouge, Istrouma, and Broadmoor high schools. Later she taught at Redemptorist High School for an additional 25 years. She received her Masters in Education degree from San Diego State University. In 1970, Betty Dean was selected as the High School Teacher of the Year in the East Baton Rouge Parish School system. She was active in the civic life of Baton Rouge: Past Worthy Matron of the Fairfields Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star; Past Regent of the John James Audubon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; member and officer of the Broadmoor Residents Association, Aquatic Club of Baton Rouge, Delta Kappa Gamma education sorority, and Executive Women International. Betty Dean was a long time member of Istrouma Baptist Church, having become a member there in 1940.The family wants to acknowledge the love and support given by Cancer Services of Baton Rouge and the Carpenter House, especially the untiring services of Penny Perkins, RN. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to these organizations or the Shriners Hospital in Shreveport. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East 11000 Florida Blvd. and visitation will resume Saturday from 9:00am and until funeral services in funeral home chapel at 11:00am led by Ron Lamb and Dr. Ferris Jordan of Istrouma Baptist Church.
