Ellen Patricia Hansen DePierri, a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, passed peacefully Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Carpenter House in Baton Rouge. Born in Chicago, IL on December 8, 1926, to Peter Mathias Hansen and Ella Marion Bach Hansen, Ellen graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in Home Economics and an M.A. in Education. She subsequently taught at Iowa State Teacher's College and the University of Illinois. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, William G. DePierri, daughter Shawn DePierri Miller and husband Thomas Miller Jr., son Robert DePierri and wife Michelle Millet DePierri, son Thomas DePierri and wife Trudy Babin Avrill DePierri, grandchildren Thomas "Trey" Miller III, Olivia DePierri, Danielle DePierri, Tiffani Avrill Theriot and husband Brandon Theriot, Jeremy Avrill and Matthew Avrill, great-grandchildren Slayde Theriot, Ty Theriot and Kayne Theriot. She is also survived by sister Donna Hansen Swanson and husband Richard Swanson, nephews Dann Hansen, Peter Hansen and Matthew Swanson, and niece Kira Swanson. She was preceded in death by her father Peter Mathias Hansen, mother Ella Marion Bach Hansen, brother Neal Robert Hansen, and nephews Phillip Hansen and Paul Hansen. Grandma, as she was fondly known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and hosting and attending family gatherings. She was a very progressive thinker who enjoyed entertaining and sharing her talents with others. Ellen was a lifelong learner and teacher who will be remembered for her generosity, charity, and philanthropic involvement. Her leadership in many organizations exemplified the contributions she made to her community. She served as the President of the Harris County Texas League of Women Voters. She also served as the President of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) Lagniappe Woman's Club for two years, Yearbook Editor for GFWC Lagniappe Woman's Club for several years, and was presented the Martha Guthrie Award as well as the Woman of the Year Award for the GFWC Lagniappe Woman's Club. She was a founding member of Eight Ladies Book Club and Baton Rouge Encore, and was an active participant in the Exxon Wives Club, the Bridge Club, and Gourmet Group for over 30 years. Ellen's memorial service will be held Saturday, October 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with visitation 11:00 until Noon, at the Lake House Reception Center, 12323 Old Hammond Hwy., Baton Rouge.
