Jack passed away at Affinity Nursing Home on Friday, January 11, 2013, at age 80. Born in Alexandria, LA, he was raised in Ellisville, MS. He received degrees from Jones County Junior College in History and Mathematics, then a BA in Journalism from LSU in 1954, and a Masters in 1982. In 1954 he studied military Russian at the Army Security Agency in California and later taught Russian to ASA troops at Ft. Devens, MA. His newspaper career began at the Daily Town Talk in Alexandria, then he wrote for the LSU Extension Service in Baton Rouge, and later for the State Times: starting as a reporter and moving up to managing editor. After that he wrote again for the LSU Ag. Center until strokes caused his early retirement in 1996. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church, and along with his wife, worked with college students for more than 40 years. They later became members of University Baptist Church. He loved family vacations in the Great Smoky Mountains; reading, especially history; and collecting stamps: First Day Covers. He and his family rescued many animals in need, giving them medical help and a loving home. He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Nelda Zophy of Fort Worth, TX; his wife, Anne Carter Lord, and their four daughters and famililes: Catherine Lord of Raleigh, NC; Janne Crews and husband, Charles, of Crowley, LA; Nancy Cuccio and husband, Sam, of Baton Rouge, LA; and Jackie Kirkpatrick and husband, Kyle, of Prilep, Macedonia; and nine grandchildren: Kate and Sarah Crews; Matthew, Anna Catherine, Elizabeth and John Michael Cuccio; and Rebekah, Joshua and Daniel Kirkpatrick. A memorial service will held Thursday at University Baptist Church, with visitation at 10 am and the service at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the International Mission Board (www.imb.org) or to the Homeless Ministry at University Baptist Church at 5775 Highland Rd., Baton Rouge, 70808.
