Following a brief illness, our beloved brother, father and grandfather joined the Lord in heaven on Wednesday, March 19, 2014. He was 74 years old. Born November 9, 1939 in New Roads, Ovide served for four years in the United States Air Force. Known to his friends and family as "Big O," "Uncle O" or "Poppa," he is remembered as a man who loved his family, his friends, storytelling, gardening, scouting, genealogy and Cajun music. He was a 1980 recipient of the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Geraldine "Gerry" Delatte Mix; five children, Pamela Mix Bergeron (Eddie), Mark Gregory Mix, Lorie Mix Hebert Grezaffi (Joe), Virginia Mix Gunn (Robert), and Julie Mix Hooks; 14 grandchildren, Michael, Lauren and Thomas Bergeron; Matthew and Colin Mix; Mary Alexandra "Allie" and Raegan Hebert; Hunter, Kaitlyn and Andrew Grezaffi; Ramie and Riley Gunn; and Bailey and Reese St. Romain; four sisters, Hilda Palmquist, Marilyn Chenevert, Genevieve Jones, Mary Alice Bohne, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo L. Mix and Hilda Schexnayder Mix, two brothers, Edward and Leo Mix; a sister, Francis Moniotte; and a grandson, John Taylor Hebert. He lost three siblings at young ages, Mary Theresa Mix, Joseph Mix and Marjorie Mix. He retired after 22 years as a technician for Bellsouth and 10 years as Camp Ranger at the Boy Scouts' Camp Avondale in Clinton, La. He was serving as a part-time Civil Deputy for the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office at the time of his passing. Visitation is on Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Roads, with a Mass of Christian Burial conducted by Rev. Msgr. Robert H. Berggreen following at 11 a.m. Graveside interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery on New Roads Street.
