Richard A. "Dick" Upton, a resident of Baton Rouge, was born in 1929 in Mattoon, Illinois and died Sunday, July 28, 2013. It was his wish that he be cremated and as such there was no public viewing. There will be a memorial service for family and friends in celebration of his life at a later date. In high school, Dick excelled in football, basketball and track. He married his high school sweetheart, Jackie Harper, in 1949, with whom he spent a loving and wonderful life. He attended the University of Illinois where he was a member of the track team and Chi Phi fraternity. He graduated with a degree in petroleum geology and started his career with the Carter Oil Co. which later became part of Exxon. He split his time between offices from Salt Lake City and Denver surveying the Rocky Mountains, often on horseback. Eventually his work brought him to New Orleans, and later he joined Delta Drilling Co. and then Valero Co. in San Antonio as a Senior Vice President. He retired in 1988 and moved his wife back to Louisiana to be with their two sons and their families. Dick was as intense about his hobbies as his work. He and his wife owned a series of sailboats until he found cruising in a diesel trawler much more fun, and was Commodore of the Pontchartrain Yacht Club in the late 1970s. He and Jackie made boating friends all over the world, most particularly in Mandeville and Orange Beach, AL. He also played golf wherever he went, always in pursuit of the perfect golf swing. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jackie Harper Upton; sons Mark Upton and wife Martha Beck Upton and Jeffrey Upton and wife Lisa Wilkins Upton; granddaughters Rachael Upton, Emily Upton Fitts and her husband Joey Fitts, Michelle Upton Nystul and her husband Raymond Nystul, Jacqueline Upton, Sara Upton and Anna Upton; great-grandchildren, Ella Rae Nystul, Ian Jeffrey Nystul, Landon Shea Upton and Grace Anne Sonnier; his only sister, Dolores Eickberg of Arcola, IL and nieces Christy Wirick, Ashley Mcnary and her husband Scott and nephew Michael Mackey; sister-in-law Cheryl Ann Olson, niece Erin Olson Watts, her husband Jim Watts and their son Jimmy Mack Watts, nephews Mark Olson and Michael Olson and great nephew Emery Olson. He is preceded in death by his parents Marion B. Upton and Daisy Dorris; brother-in-law Mack Olson and his only daughter Diane Upton. His family and friends will miss his generous, easygoing nature, kind and adventurous spirit, and genuine sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Association.
