Dr. Samuel Joseph Cefalu, 87, passed away October 18, 2013 after a brief illness. He was born in Shreveport and was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge. S.J. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rose Santangelo Cefalu; daughters, Bridget Cefalu, Mary Barker (Marc), Lucia Dilg (Thomas), and Jeana Cefalu; and grandsons, Branden and Brock Barker, Tony and Michael Dilg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Sarah Cefalu, and brother, August Cefalu. S.J. graduated from Catholic High School, Louisiana State University and Loyola Dental School. As a dentist he worked in Baton Rouge for nearly 50 years. Dr. Cefalu was a member of the American Dental Association, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a Veteran of WWII, and an avid hunter and fisherman. Visitation will be at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Thursday, October 24, 2013 beginning at 9:00 am, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am, Rev. Cleo Milano, Celebrant. Entombment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Thomas Dilg, Tony Dilg, Gordon Jones, Richard Lemoine, Gerald Rodgers, and Logan Hardie. Honorary pallbearer is Pvt. Michael Dilg. The family would like to thank Dr. Kaycee Weaver, as well as the other doctors and nurses at Baton Rouge General Hospital Bluebonnet for their care.
