Dr. Thomas Edward Weiss, Jr. passed away Tuesday October 1, 2013. You would have enjoyed having Ed Weiss as a friend. His positive outlook, kind nature and optimism was influenced by his upbringing in New Orleans and by his parents Thomas Edward Weiss and Catherine Edwards Weiss. Born in New Orleans in 1951, Edward graduated from Jesuit High School in 1969 with his lifelong friend Henri Louapre (Butz) and then found his passion for botany as an undergraduate at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He continued his education at Tulane University completing a Master's degree in Botany, and then earning a PhD in Botany at the University of Georgia where he met his beloved wife Marcia Stefani. He started his teaching career in the Fall of 1980 at Christopher Newport College (now University) where he dutifully served until retiring in August 2013. He quickly became a key member of the faculty, engaged in all facets of university activities, and rose to the rank of Full Professor. He was loved by staff, students and faculty alike. During his tenure, he developed many courses and was involved with the design of two science buildings on the campus. His students will always remember the legendary field trips to Maine and Florida which provided unique experiences and learning in natural environments. Equally legendary were his concert road trips with many of his friends and family: Edward was a particular fan of the Gipsy Kings, The Battlefield Band, Arlo Gutherie and Robin and Linda Williams. Music was an essential part of Edward's life and he helped to enrich others through exposure many different genres and concert venues. Long remembered are his frantic dashes down the hill at Wolf Trap to lay down blankets and claim a perfect location for he and his friends. He was especially loved by family: his wife Marcia Stefani (who preceded him in death) and two daughters, Catherine Weiss Edwards (Katie) and Jenna Kristen Weiss. One of his most precious treasures will always be his grandson Lincoln Edwards. Edward's many friends and family will truly miss his infectious, fun-loving personality. A celebration of life will be conducted on November 3, 2013 at 1:30 in the Music and Theatre Hall of the Ferguson Center for the Arts at Christopher Newport University. If you would like to make a donation on Dr. Weiss' behalf, in lieu of flowers please contribute to the Dr. T. Edward Weiss Endowed Merit Scholarship in Organismal and Environmental Biology at Christopher Newport University.
