Alvin William Simpson, 87, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away Monday morning, January 14, 2013, after a brief two-day visit at the Baton Rouge General Bluebonnet. Alvin was born June 22, 1925 in Arcadia, Louisiana, and was a high school graduate at the Arcadia High. From there Alvin went on to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and graduated from there in 1948 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Alvin was baptized at the age of 13 in Perritt's pond located near the Alabama Baptist Church in Arcadia, La. He served in the military during the latter phase of World War ll. Alvin went to sea duty in May of 1945. This included going to Aruba, Columbia, Panama, Hawaii, Eniwetak Islands, Shanghai, and learned of the Japanese surrender while at sea in the Pacific Ocean. Shortly after returning home, he fell in love and married Helen Marie Jowers in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They celebrated 64 happy years together on December 10, 2012. He and his family lived in El Dorado, Arkansas for many years before he retired. After 40 years with Murphy Oil Corporation as Vice President, a company he loved and respected, Alvin retired. He soon moved to Baton Rouge Louisiana to begin his retirement. Alvin is survived by his wife Helen Marie, two children; Cynthia Dianne Taylor & husband Charles of College Station, Texas and David Gregg Simpson & wife Katie of Baton Rouge; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at First Baptist Church on Convention St., downtown Baton Rouge, where Alvin and Helen have been members since moving to Baton Rouge. No visitation will be held, as he has chosen to donate his body to Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.
