NICHOLS, ERNEST WARREN Ernest Warren Nichols of Fort Payne, Ala., passed away peacefully at the age of 82 in his home on Thursday, April 1, 2004, after a short illness. Mr. Nichols, affectionately known as Opa to his family and friends, was a native son of Fort Payne and was born on May 1, 1921. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janie Winfred Sneed Nichols. They are members of the First Baptist Church of Fort Payne. He is also survived by two daughters, Charlotte Amanda Myrick of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Christine Elizabeth Nichols of Baton Rouge. Grandchildren are Christy Alanda Dean of Chamblee, Ga., Robert Leland Miller and James Collins Miller, both of Baton Rouge, Allison Denise Myrick of College Station, Texas, and Jonathan Nichols Myrick of Chamblee. Opa is survived by a great-grandchild, Emma Nichole Dean of Chamblee. He was the son of Lewis Watson Nichols Jr. (1896-1967) and Lela Elizabeth Leath Nichols (1899-1978). Mr. Nichols had a sister, Mary Elizabeth Nichols McCoy (1918-1987) and a brother, Louis Watson Nichols III (1927-2000). Mr. Nichols was a disabled veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Visitation was at the Wilson Funeral Home, 3801 Gault Ave. N, Fort Payne, Friday, April 2, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There was a graveside service only at Glenwood Cemetery Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Fort Payne, 106 Grand Ave. NW, Fort Payne, AL 35967 or to the E & J Foundation, 205 Sixteen St. NW, Fort Payne, AL 35967. The E & J Foundation is dedicated to the support of the needs of children in the arts, crafts and nature studies in the Fort Payne area.
