Isaac Shelmire Sr.

A resident of Baton Rouge, he passed away at 2 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 70 and a native of Baker. Viewing at St. John Baptist Church, 820 New Rafe Meyer Road, Alsen community, the Rev. Donald Ruth, pastor, from 1 p.m. until religious service at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12, conducted by the Rev. Oliver Houston, pastor of Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Interment is in Thomas Chapel Cemetery. Survived by his wife of 51 years, Sybil C. Shelmire; two daughters, Lavon Shelmire-Thompson and Janice Shelmire, both of Baton Rouge; son, Carl and wife Lisa Dunn, Port Allen; siblings, Willie Shelmire Jr., Carrie Shelmire Nixon, Johnnie Shelmire and Eula Shelmire George, all of Baton Rouge, Mildred Samadnouri and J.W. Hayden, both of Zachary, and Jesse Shelmire Sr., Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He retired from the city of Baton Rouge in 1996 and was a member and deacon of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Baker. Preceded in death by death by his parents, Willie Shelmire Sr. and Carrie Freeman; and son, Isaac Shelmire Jr. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center for the dedicated and compassionate care provided to him during his brief illness.
