A retired dentist and native of New Orleans, he died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at his home in Gonzales. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Visiting at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church, 1022 N. Burnside Ave., Gonzales, on Tuesday, Dec. 13, from 8 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Entombment in Hope Haven Gardens of Memory, Gonzales. Survived by a daughter, Vanessa Hersh and husband Martin; three sons, Herman Nelson, Lance Nelson and wife Lelia, and Todd Nelson; sister-in-law, Mabel Nelson; two nephews, Steven Nelson and wife Belinda, and David Nelson and wife Jennifer; grandchild and best friend, James "Bucky" Nelson; other beloved grandchildren, Kameron Keller, Colby Nelson, Hannah Nelson, Joshua Nelson, Chris Nelson, Calub Nelson, Sarah Nelson, Annie Nelson and Garland Hemphill; stepgrandchild, David Morgan; and a host of loving family members and friends. Special thanks to Donald Cox who was like a son to Dr. Nelson. Preceded in death by his parents, Florine Grimes and Louis Arthur Nelson; a brother, Louis "Buddy" A. Nelson Jr.; and nephew, Arthur "Artie" Nelson. He was a parishioner of St. Theresa Catholic Church. In his spare time he enjoyed dealing art and antiques, breeding and racing horses, and traveling all over the world. He had a passion for spending time with his grandchildren, cooking, gardening, reading including his new iPad, and donating his time , energy and resources toward his charitable efforts.
