John Maginnis Obituary

The publisher of LaPolitics Weekly and LaPolitics.com, and author of "The Last Hayride," John James Maginnis died May 25, 2014, in New Orleans. He was 66. Born in Baton Rouge on May 17, 1948, he took an interest in politics and journalism at a very early age. As a young man, after school would let out at Sacred Heart, he would fold up editions of The State-Times and deliver them from his bike. While at Catholic High School, he started his first regular column in the school newspaper, The Bear Facts, and later served as editor of The Daily Reveille at Louisiana State University. John served in the U.S. Navy after college, spending time in the Philippines during the Vietnam War. Upon returning to his beloved Louisiana, John turned to what he did best and landed a reporter's position with The Catholic Commentator. Soon after he struck out as an independent journalist and publisher, writing three books including "Cross to Bear" and "The Politics of Reform." He became one of the most recognizable names in Bayou State politics and found publishing successes in the 1970s and 1980s with Gris Gris magazine, Baton Rouge Enterprise and later Louisiana Political Review. The latter gave way to The Fax Weekly in 1993, which underwent a name change, to LaPolitics Weekly, not long after. In recent years, John had expanded the political newsletter and its website by adding new staff, developing media partnerships and broadening its editorial scope. Known for having sources in every nook and cranny of state government, John was not only trusted but sought out by Louisiana's political influencers. His syndicated opinion column appeared in 21 newspapers around the state and he was a regular guest on programs like Informed Sources and The Jim Engster Show. He was also a featured speaker for civic groups and organizations across the Gulf Coast. In 2000, John was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the LSU Manship School of Mass Communications. When complimented on his work, John was fond of saying, "I owe it all to the material." Those who knew him best, however, knew better. He is survived by his wife Jacqueline Drinkwater Maginnis and his siblings Renee Maginnis Dole of Baton Rouge; Kathleen Maginnis Bierman and her husband Leslie, of Weston, Connecticut; and Dr. Michael John Maginnis and his wife Mary Kendall, of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by nephews and nieces, including Dr. Michael William Dole and his wife Adrienne, of Alexandria, Louisiana; Christopher Todd Dole, PhD, and his wife Joy, of Florence, Massachusetts; Gregory Edward Dole of Houston, Texas; Damian Maginnis Bierman and his wife Winnie of Hong Kong, Republic of China; Kendall Ashley Maginnis McCurry and her husband Jamie, of Savannah, Georgia; Stuart Wheaton Maginnis and his wife Brooke, of St. Francisville, Louisiana; Robert Beauclerc Maginnis and his fiancé Sophie, of Baton Rouge; and Brinkley Anne Maginnis, of Baton Rouge. John was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Joseph Maginnis and Inez Blancq Maginnis. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

John's departure is a big loss to all of us. I was always looking forward to his trusted reports and analyses. He was an institution in both news and politics. May he rest in peace.
With deepest sympathy to his family.

I grew up with John in BR on Rittiner Drive. We had a great time! John knew who Billie Sol Estes was long before any of us did! My dad was astounded. His interest was always in politics, even from an early age. He was just such a good & regular guy! I'll miss his work, but I'll miss even more his walking this earth with me.

I've admired his writing since getting involved in politics in the 80's. He was the best.

Janet and I extend our sincere condolences to Jackie and to John's family.
Like others who have signed the guest book, I met John at LSU (1969) and we remained good friends since. His perceptive insights, clever wit and good humor in describing the antics at the Capitol and Governor's Mansion always made for great reading. He will be sorely missed as an astute chronicler of La. politics but his influence on future writers will live on. Well done and farewell!

I met John in the 1960's at Loyola University in New Orleans; I always remembered him because he was a gentleman and very kind! When I saw the Obits yesterday, I said to myself; I know he made this world a better place, just by being who & what he was!! Rest in Peace and God bless your family!

My family knew John from Sacred Heart and Catholic High. I had the pleasure to get to know him later while living in the same neighborhood. He would stop by when I was mowing my yard with a self propelled motorless mower and said each time that I was one of the more "civilized creatures" for using my method of mowing. He was such a great wit and good friend. Fly high, John. Your friend

Our state has lost a journalist of great merit. From my own start in politics in 1972 as State Senator from Metairie, District 10, John Maginnis was a reliable and trustworthy presence on the scene.
A kind man, he set a good example for all, he did for me. May he rest in peace.
