Sue McCullough Barlow

Sue Barlow Obituary

Sue McCullough Barlow died peacefully at her home on Sunday, March 28, 2010, after an extended illness. She was 78. Sue was preceded in death by her father, A.H. "Mac" McCullough; and mother, Leland Evelyn McCullough, for whom she provided loving care for many years. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn McCullough Hunt; and nephews, Richard A. Jennings and David A. Jennings, of Texas. Though born in Memphis, Tenn., Sue considered Baton Rouge her home. After attaining her master's degree from LSU, she devoted the next 50 years of her life to meeting the educational needs of young people. She began her teaching career at Baton Rouge Junior High School, established the Baton Rouge Reading Clinic, served as academic counselor for athletes at LSU, and concluded her career as guidance counselor at McKinley Middle Magnet School. One of her fondest memories was accompanying Dale Brown and his basketball team to Hawaii. Sue's children were the hundreds of students whom she nurtured and guided with wisdom and affection. Sue leaves behind many beloved friends to whom she devoted time, energy and a caring spirit. She valued the many good times she shared with her friends at The Patrician. She was a member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Memorial service will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., Thursday, April 1, at 2 p.m. Special thanks is extended to Sandy Hull and her staff at Home Instead Senior Care.

I am so sorry to read about Ms. Barlow's illness and death. She was my speech teacher at Broadmoor Jr. High school. I was tall and looked at her as a beautiful example of what my
parents were asking me to be, proud of my height. She carried her height well, unlike I did in Jr. high, I was trying to slump over to shorten myself. She was a VERY nice teacher and caring of her students who were scared to death to be in speech class. She made us comfortable and willing to get up in front of the class. Class of 65-66

I'm hoping your memories will help you through this difficult time. I know I only have good memories of Ms. Barlow.

It is with great sadness that I learn of Sue's death. Regretfully, we have not been in touch for years; thus, I had no knowledge of her illness and am sorry I didn't.

I met Sue socially in the early 60's and fell in love with her immediately! She was so much fun, so friendly and SO interesting. I soon felt as though I had known her all my life.

Evidently, we went separate ways and were not in touch but that would soon change. Our paths crossed again within the EBRP School System where we were both immersed in teaching careers and worked together on many projects and committees associated with reading instruction....we had that common passion. As always, being with Sue was fun and stimulating and I loved working with her on a professional basis. I particularly enjoyed watching from afar as she and Alta provided such a valuable resource to so many students through The Reading Clinic.

Sue made significant contributions to education in Baton Rouge and the surrounding area and will be remembered for her professionalism, charm and spirited personality. I will especially remember her as a special, special friend and one I always admired for her strength and incredible attitude when faced with adversity. She was a first-class act and I loved her. GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE...........

Working with Mrs. Sue was a great pleasure. Even on her bad days she was in good spirits and kept you laughing. She was a wonderful lady and we all loved her at Homeinstead. Rest peacefully, Mrs. Sue, until we meet again. God Bless.

I first met Sue at Baton Rouge Junior High School in the early 1960s when I was a green new teacher for one semester and she was such a beautiful, kind person who took me under her wing and taught me the ropes there. I remember the funniest thing I learned about her soon after we met was that she had just built a new house and didn't have a laundry room in it--"I don't do laundry," she told me, "I send it all out to the dry cleaners to be done." I thought then--now there's a Real
Strong Woman. Later when our paths crossed again at McKinley Middle Magnet School years later, I realized that truly she was a Real Strong Woman. We became reacquainted and developed a wonderful friendship that I will always treasure. Many good times were had after we were together--suppers, lunches, visits outside of school, and inside it. One of my favorite pictures of Sue is one of Sue Barlow, Sue Potts and Diane Knobloch and me at dinner at Giamanco's. After I moved away from Baton Rouge in 2001, I missed her very much. Her passing is a great loss to me, as well as to many of her other friends.
The world is a better place for Sue Barlow having been here.

Mrs. Barlow was my fourth grade reading teacher in 1959. She was a very kind lady.
