Wayne Crawford Obituary

Wayne Scott Crawford died at 11:26 p.m. on April 14, 2014, in the Hospice Wing of the Baton Rouge General Hospital, he was 85 years old. He was born on June 28, 1928 to Howard Nathan Crawford and Claudia Fields Crawford. He had one brother and four sisters, all of which predeceased him. He grew up in Hallsville, Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana, attended Chamberlin Hunt Military Academy in Vicksburg, Mississippi and graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. He served in the United States Air Force as a Lieutenant during the Korean Conflict. He married his wife of sixty-two years, Bettye and moved to Minden, Louisiana where he co-founded the Holland-Crawford Insurance Agency with his father-in-law, Castle Overstreet Holland, in 1952. He ran the general insurance agency until his retirement in the fall of 2012. He was nationally known in insurance circles, as noted in Who's Who In America. Wayne was an active leader in civic organizations serving in leadership roles in the Methodist Church, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Boys Scouts of America, Lions Club, American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. Wayne was named the "Outstanding Young Man of the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce of Minden, Louisiana in 1968. Wayne was an avid pilot and an antique automobile restorator and collector, two passions he shared with his sons. Wayne is survived by his wife, Bettye, his three children, Scott Holland Crawford and his wife Janet Boles, Douglas Wayne Crawford, and Sally Crawford Olson and her husband Michael. He was blessed with six grandchildren, Matthew Wesley Chambers, Wendy Rae Kelly, Summer Holland Crawford, Catherine Holland Crawford, Nathan Scott Castle Crawford and Caroline Elizabeth Olson and two great grand children, John Wesley Chambers and Mary Huntington Chambers. Wayne's nature was humble and private. He quietly helped many and never sought or accepted credit for his acts of kindness and charity. He taught by example. Daddy and Gradaddy loved his family and will be missed by all of us. A private family service will be held with Rev. Chris Andrews presiding. A celebration of Wayne Scott Crawford's life will be held on Saturday, April 26th at 11:00 a.m. at the City Club of Baton Rouge. Friends and family are invited to attend. Memorial Donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Wayne: You supported me and Ark-La-Tex Underwriters throughout the years with your business and friendship. I will miss our conversations about the East Texas oil patch and conservative politics. Sincerely, Mike Gulley
