A retired teacher and head coach for McKinley High School, he passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014. He was 90 and a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. Visiting will be held at Winnfield Funeral Home, 7221 Plank Road, on Wednesday, June 4, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Visiting will be held at New St. John Baptist Church on Thursday, June 5, from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Dr. W. Marshall Myles. Interment will be in Louisiana National Cemetery. Survived by his daughters, Carla Ford Dixon, Beverly Cooper and Tonya Johnson; sons, Carl T. Ford III, Ronald Ford, Michael Ford, Rodney Johnson, and Byron Johnson Sr.; sisters, Beverly Scott, Oakland,CA, Gwendolyn Battles, Liverpool, CA, Melba Ford, San Franciso, CA, and Bettye Ford, BR, LA; 23 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, devoted caregivers, and numerous nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Carl Sr.,and Gustavia Ford; former wife, Nina Alcorn Ford; a daughter, Ninette Ford Grant; four brothers, Willie, Leo, Percy, and Charles Ford; a sister, Leecy; and two grandchildren, Aricka Ford and Kortlon Johnson. A graduate of McKinley High School, he went on to graduate from Southern University with a degree in Health and Physical Education. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, American Legion (Bonnette Harrison) Post 502, the Louisiana Officials Association, and the LSU Track and Field Officials Association.
