A native of Picayune, MS and resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on Tuesday. July 22, 2014 at St. James Place at the age of 91. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11:00am at the University United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge. Visitation will start at 10am. She was an LSU Elementary Education graduate and a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Kappa Delta Honor Societies. Joy taught school in Orange, TX and East Baton Rouge Parish. She was a former Executive Secretary for the International Hospitality Foundation, former Home Service Secretary for the American Red Cross of West Feliciana Parish during World War II. In Baton Rouge, she tutored for Operation Upgrade, Kids Hope USA, and English language classed for International wives. She is survived by her son, David W. Johnson, New York, NY and Baton Rouge, LA, brother Nolan Douglas Marchand, Houston, TX, two grandchildren, William Cameron Bigler, Black Mountain, NC and Taylor Caroline Bigler, Northeast Harbor, ME, son-in-law, Dr. William Randolph Bigler, Jr., Shreveport, LA, niece, Marie Jeanette Marchand, Houston, TX and nephew, David Vaughn Marchand, Dallas, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William A. Johnson, daughter, Mary Judith Johnson Bigler and good friend, Dr. Lee J. Melton. She was an active member of the University United Methodist Church and served on the church board. Past President of the Woman's Society of Christian service and officer of the District Woman's Society. She assisted in organizing the Artists' Guild of West Feliciana, a charter member of the Feliciana Country Gardeners, active participant in the LSU Travel Club, Lampion Study Club, Melange and Thirty Niners Book Club. She was a 50 year member of Chapter C.P.E.O., former president of the LSU Campus Club and a volunteer at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the University United Methodist Church of Baton Rouge or the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Baton Rouge.
