Charles Sheldon "Charlie" Smith, age 83, retired from the Louisiana Department of Education, U.S. Air Force and Piccadilly. A resident of Baton Rouge, he passed away Friday, Oct. 28, 2011. He was born Feb. 1, 1928, in Starks. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II before retiring from the Air Force. Visitation will be at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Monday, Oct. 31, from 11 a.m. until funeral service at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Roger Lathan conducting the service. Burial at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. He is survived by his loving wife, June Frances "Fran" (Gaspard) Smith, of 56 years; daughter, Susan Peterson and husband Pete; son, Dean J. Smith; five grandchildren, Justin Pelton, Abby Peterson, Blake Peterson, Cortland Peterson and Justine Smith; and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, James and Ada Allen Smith; son, Norman Thomas "Tom" Smith; two sisters, Evelyn Bennett and Elizabeth Murphy; and brother, James A. Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church.
