A native of Norwood, La. and resident of Baton Rouge, she died at 9:50 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 at her residence. She was 68. Visiting at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1920 Progress Rd., on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Visiting continues Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. conducted by Rev. George C. Pierce. Interment in Southern Memorial Gardens, 3012 Blount Rd., Baton Rouge. Survivors include her husband, Roy Bowie, Jr.; step-daughter, Dedra Bowie-Washington; son, Kirklin (Tonya) Bowie; six sisters, Annie Hughes, Emma Cannon, Mary Lee Parker, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Pecola Cannon Hall, Greensburg, Louisiana; Hester Boyd, Chicago, Illinois; Leola Cannon Matthews, Houston, Texas; one brother, Percy Ray, Los Angeles, California; four granddaughters, Kourtney Bowie and Karmen Bowie, Fayetteville, GA; Brienne Washington and Brandi Washington, Lobdell, LA; two great grandchildren, Kabarri Huff, Fayetteville, Georgia and Jaiydon Leo, Lobdell, LA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nenie Parker and Iverson Golden Emanuel Cannon; two sisters, Alice Carpenter, Elnora Cannon Collins; eight brothers, Willie Ray, John Jefferson, Frank Ray, Nathaniel Cannon, Emmanuel Cannon, Charlie Cannon, James Cannon, Iverson Cannon; mother-in-law, Celestine W. Bowie and father-in-law, Roy Bowie, Sr.; three brothers-in-law, Ledell Bowie, Herman Bowie and David Boyd, Sr. She graduated from Scotlandville High School in 1963 and she received her bachelor's degree in Education from Southern University in 1969. Sister Bowie was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. George C. Pierce until her death. She served on several ministries in the church such as the Deaconess Ministry, Sisterhood Ministry and Women of Integrity. She was also an active member of the African Violet Social Club.
