John Gaffney Obituary

GAFFNEY
John Bernard OAM

The President and members
of the Victorian Bar extend
deepest sympathy to the
family of John (Jack) Gaffney.
From Broken Hill, where he was a "lad messenger"
for the Railways, and played
football with Broken Hill YCW and South Broken
Hill, Jack came to Melbourne
to the Victorian Crown
Law Department (1947-67).
He worked in the Public
Solicitor's Office, the Titles
Office and the Local Government
Department, studying Law
part-time. He played football
for Fitzroy in the VFL; coached Prahran in the VFA; and was on the VFL Tribunal. He was admitted
to practice in 1967 and was
a Partner in Le Grand
Randles Gaffney & Co; then
came to the Bar in 1978. He was Supreme Court
Registrar of Criminal Appeals;
a Master; and Registrar of
the Court of Appeal. In
retirement, he was a Mediator
at the Legal Profession Tribunal.
