Alvena Mitchell (nee Gibson), 86, of South Amherst, died Saturday, June 22, 2013, at her home following a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Quinton, Ky. She was raised there before moving to South Amherst, where she had made her home for the last 62 years.
She was employed as a nurse's aid at Amherst Manor Nursing Home for 28 years before retiring in 1988.
Alvena and her husband were charter members of North Lake Missionary Baptist Church in South Amherst.
She was known for her giving and charitable spirit and her greatest joy was helping others and sharing her faith in Jesus Christ with others.
Survivors include her daughter, Anna Mitchell-Sprosty of Vermilion; six grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers Joseph Gibson of Indianapolis, Ind., and Leroy Gibson of Kentucky; and sisters Indavada Gibson of Somerset, Ky., Helen Williams of Elyria, and Ola Mae Hancock of Somerset, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ira Mitchell on Jan. 18, 1994; son, Harold Lee Mitchell in 2007; brother, Hoover Gibson; and her parents, John William and Edna Vada Gibson (nee Hardwick).
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26 at North Lake Missionary Baptist Church, South Amherst, with the Rev. Butch Jones officiating.
Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
