James Ray Sparrow, 94, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Signature Healthcare in Taylorsville.
He is the husband of the late Hattie Mae Goodlett Sparrow and son of the late Ernest D. and Lillie Mae Richardson Sparrow.
Sparrow was born Nov. 10, 1919 in Taylorsville. He worked as a farmer and a retired pressman for Kraft Foods in Lawrenceburg. An active member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Taylorsville, he served as a Sunday school teacher and as deacon for 25 years.
He is survived by two sons, Joe Sparrow and Jerry Sparrow (Susan), both of Lawrenceburg; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Christine McGee of Shelby County; and a brother, Gilbert Sparrow of Mount Eden.
He was preceded in death by two infant children, Jean Hope Sparrow and John Howard Sparrow; three sisters, Anna Keeling, Geneva Hagmen and Mary Elizabeth Sparrow; and four brothers, Carl, Wilbert, Cecil Truman and Kenneth Marion Sparrow.
Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Spencer County with Bro. Greg Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Nethery, Joseph and Dylan Walker, Chris and Drew Turner, Dexter McGee and Raymond Sparrow. Honorary bearers were Sean Tanner, Marcus Von Kalben, Greg Knapper and the Bethlehem Sunday School Class.
