Garland Gene Hawkins, 79, of Lake Wales, Fla., formerly of Lawrenceburg, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at Valencia Hills Health & Rehab Center in Lakeland, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence Lester and Cordie Riley Hawkins; five brothers J.C., Floyd, Paul, Leon and Maurice Hawkins; and three sisters Juanita Peyton, Zula Belle Darnell and Mary Catherine Thurman.
Garland was a graduate of Anderson County High School and worked as a mechanical engineer with I.B.M. in Lexington for 28 years. He attended the Dundee Baptist Church on the Hill in Dundee, Fla., and a member of the Senior Circle in Lake Wales, Fla.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Garland helped form the Anderson County Archery Club. He also enjoyed traveling out west, gardening and planting flowers.
Garland is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Hockensmith Hawkins; two daughters, Vickie Barry of Beverly Hills, Fla., and Tamara Hawkins (John) Szafranski of Winter Haven, Fla.; a foster daughter, Lois Harnstrom (Mike) Taylor of Winter Garden, Fla.; two grandchildren Garland Szafranski and Jennifer Lowry; three foster grandchildren Ryan and Kara Caudill, and Luke Harnstrom; a step-grandchild Cyndi (Chad) Ashley; two step great-grandchildren, Chloe and Cyleigh Ashley; three brothers, Irvin Hawkins, Earl (Evelyn) Hawkins, and Ronald (Mary) Hawkins, all of Lawrenceburg; several special nieces, Ann Berg, Donna Rockas, Charlene Smith, Marilyn Proctor and Karen Criswell; and special added family Scottie, Paul and Chris Daniel.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 2 at noon at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg with Bro. Arnold Brown and Dr. Mike Hamrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery. Visitation will be held 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
