Leonard L. Newkirk, 92, Columbus, died at 7:25 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Richard L. Roudebush V.A. Medical Center, Indianapolis.
He was born Nov. 3, 1920 in Cortland to the late Louis and Catharine Darlage Newkirck. On June 25, 1965 he married the former Leonia Conrad, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 1979.
Mr. Newkirk was a World War II Army
veteran. He received EAME Theatre Ribbon with five Bronze Stars
, a Silver Star, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a self-employed carpenter and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was a faithful member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Waymansville, and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 1987, Columbus.
Survivors include his daughter, Joyce Lynn (Randy) Sims of Columbus; grandchildren, Whitney Hundley of Indianapolis and Malachi and Jacob Sims both of Columbus; a sister, Marie Newkirk of Seymour; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Newkirk was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; sister, Wilma Newkirk; and brothers, Omer, Clarence, and John Newkirk.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Waymansville, with Rev. John L. Beabout officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
Friends may call from 2 until 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike, and from 9 a.m. Monday until time of service at the church.
Memorials may be given to St. Peter Lutheran Church, Waymansville.
