Irene E. Pollert, 86, of Brownstown passed away on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013 at 1:18 a.m. at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.
Irene was born on Oct. 10, 1926 in Jackson County, the daughter of Albert and Lillie (Fenneberg) Pollert, both of whom preceded her in death. Irene graduated from the Lutheran Medical Center, St. Louis, in 1953, as a registered nurse and received her bachelors and masters degrees from Washington University, in 1955 and 1957. She continued her education at Butler University and Indiana University.
Miss Pollert was employed at several hospitals in St. Louis prior to becoming a faculty member at the IU School of Nursing, where she taught for 28 years, retiring in 1991.
Her career included being published in four Nursing manuals and presentations before the Safety Council and the American Hospital Association, at Washington, D.C. Irene's name was included in the "Who's Who of American Women." She served as the director to the RN and BSN program during her tenure. After her retirement, she continued to support the school by her participation in its fundraising efforts for student scholarships.
In 2000, Irene also received IUPUI School of Nursing Honorary Alumna Award for her outstanding dedication and contributions to the nursing profession.
Miss Pollert was a life long member of the Lutheran Church and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church-Sauers. She was also a member of the American Nurses Association, National League of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, alumni member of St. John's College in Kansas, Lutheran Medical Center Alumni in St. Louis, and Washington University Alumni in St. Louis.
She is survived by three sisters; Evelyn Luecke, Frances Holle, both of Seymour and Dorothy Gray, of North Port, Fla., and three brothers; Alan (Polly) Pollert of Brownstown, Roland (Virginia) Pollert of Franklin and Leslie (Alice) Pollert of Martinsville, Ind. Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive Irene.
Her parents and brother Willis preceded her in death.
The Rev. Craig Mulbach will conduct funeral services on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013 at noon at St John's Lutheran Church-Sauers. Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Burkholder Funeral Chapel and from 11 a.m. until time of service at the church. Her burial will follow the service at the church cemetery.
