Edna Mae Smith, 85, Vallonia, died 9:41 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown. She'd been ill one month.
Mrs. Smith was born in 1928 in Indianapolis, the daughter of Nona Waskom McMillan and Howard McMillan. She moved to Vallonia in 1930-when she was 18 months old-to live with her grandparents, Azariah and Viola (Ode) Crockett Waskom.
On Jan. 11, 1942 in Kentucky, she married Noble (Snooty) Smith, and he preceded her in death.
She received her graduate equivalency diploma from Brownstown High School in 1973, the same year her son graduated from BCHS. She attended IU Southeast School of Business.
Mrs. Smith worked at HO Canfield for 14 years, as a bookkeeper for Ashland Oil for 17 years and served a Driftwood Township assessor for 16 years. After retirement, she was a nanny for 7 1/2 years for Clay and Clark Hauer.
She served on various committees for the Fort Vallonia Days Festival for over 40 years, including presiding as the first Fort Vallonia president and caretaker of the Fort Vallonia Museum for 42 years.
Mrs. Smith was also a member of Seymour Elks Auxiliary and the Jackson County Hospital Guild, a representative for Driftwood Township Bicentennial and representative for Driftwood Township in the Antique Building at the Jackson County Fair.
She was a member of the Driftwood Christian Church and was pianist for the Vallonia Methodist Church for 20 years. She also taught Sunday School for 46 years and was a Boy Scout den mother.
Her hobbies included weaving baskets, quilting, cooking and baking pies. Her love for God, her church and her family gave her strength. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Survivors include three children: Sue (Jim) Smith Miller, Dr. Becky (Ken) Smith-Eggeman and Lisa (Chuck) Smith-Jorgensen; four grandchildren: Tollie Miller, Todd Miller, Shannel Novachek and Noelle Eaman; and six great grandchildren: Azariah Eaman, Abigail Eaman, Seadon Eaman, Meili Novachek, Siannah Novachek and Brooke Miller.
She was preceded in death by both parents, her husband, brothers Victor B. McMillan and James A. McMillan, and son Michael Smith.
Funeral services were scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 and she was to be buried at Vallonia Cemetery.
Johnson Funeral Home, Vallonia, handled arrangements.
Memorials may be given to Driftwood Christian Church, Fort Vallonia Day Festival and AIDS Foundation.
