Funeral services for Leonard O. Gardenour, 62, of New Albany, Ind., were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at Graceland Baptist Church, 3600 Kamer Miller Road, New Albany with a graveside service following at approximately 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown. Visitation was held at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville.
He passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Floyd Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 3, 1951 in Huntington, Ind., and grew up in Wabash, Ind. He graduated from Wabash High School in 1969. He graduated from Indiana University in 1973 where he was a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Blue Key Honor Fraternities and the Marching Hundred Band.
He received a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University in 1977. He was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force security police, where he served eight years and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
Retiring in 2005 after 30 years service as a criminal justice professional, he established the criminal justice program at Ivy Tech Southern Indiana, serving as program chair from 2007 until 2014.
He also served as a criminal justice adjunct instructor at Indiana Wesleyan University and was a member of Graceland Baptist Church in New Albany.
He leaves behind a legacy of hundreds of future criminal justice professionals whose service was guided by his "Pearls of Wisdom."
He was married on April 30, 1983 to Rebecca Baker and their daughter Abigail was born from this union who was the light of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Becky Gardenour; his daughter, Abigail Hilyard and her husband Matt; his parents, Don and Madalyn Gardenour; two sisters, Peggy Taylor and her husband Byron; Rosalee Blevins and her husband Bill; and a brother, Kent Gardenour; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special heartfelt thanks to the Ivy Tech Criminal Justice students, staff and alumni.
