Barbara L. Melton Fleenor, 59, Madison and formerly of Brownstown, died 2:45 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2014 at her home in Madison.
She was born Sept. 14, 1954 in Princeton, Ind., to Andrew W. & Esther E. Sickman Melton.
She was raised in Oakland City, Ind. and graduated from Wood Memorial High School in 1972.
She was united in marriage on Aug. 4, 1973 in Brownstown to Steven D. Fleenor. This happy union of 40 years was blessed with two sons, Jeremy and Ryan.
The young family lived in the Brownstown area and North Vernon area for 10 years before settling in Jefferson County in 1983.
Besides providing a warm and lovely home for her husband and children, she attended beauty college and became a license beautician. She also provided private babysitting and housekeeping services.
Barbara is remembered by her Hanover Baptist Church family as an active and faithful member who would help wherever needed, especially in the music program.
She enjoyed collecting angel and Precious Moments figurines, interior decorating, shopping and helping others. Early in life, Barbara enjoyed boating and fishing with her husband and sons.
She loved to bake chocolate chip cookies and found great enjoyment in sharing them with everyone.
She had a special gift in helping others who were handicapped. She had a love of music and especially loved the Gaithers.
Barbara had a great fondness for her Yorkie dog, Miss Priss, and enjoyed dressing her up daily.
Barbara was diagnosed with liver cancer on Feb. 10, 2014 and began a courageous battle, never wavering in her faith and strength.
Barbara was a devoted wife, loving mom and caring sister and will be missed greatly by her family and community.
Survivors include her husband, of Madison; two sons, Jeremy S. Fleenor and S. Ryan (Samantha) Fleenor, all of Madison; three sisters: Catherine Davis, Jasper, Carol Wirth, Seymour and Linda (Jim) Brace, Jasper; brother, Richard (Sandy) Melton, Francisco; three-sisters-in-law, Thelma Crider, Norman, Vivian Mouser, Indianapolis and Marla (Orval) Fish, Brownstown; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; father and mother-in-law, Dan and Laura Fleenor; her brothers-in-law, Jack Crider, Bob Mouser, Boyd Fleenor and Richard Fleenor; and sisters-in-law, Maxine Lois Fleenor and Sue Fleenor.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, April 4 at the Hanover Baptist Church, 151 W. Main St., Hanover, with pastor J.D. Traylor officiating. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery in Madison.
Friends may call Thursday, April 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive, Madison; and Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
The family requests memorials in memory of Barbara to the Barbara Fleenor Memorial Fund. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
