Elwood J. Newberger, 87, of Bellevue passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.
He was born May 9, 1926 in Bellevue, Ohio the son of Clarence and Irene (Rauch) Newberger.
Elwood graduated in 1944 from York High School. He then served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II from 1944-1946.
Upon his return, he married his sweetheart, Maxine Smith, on June 29, 1946 and farmed until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 46 and VFW Post 1238 of Bellevue, where he was very involved and held various offices in each organization.
He volunteered to teach flag etiquette at the Bellevue Schools and helped raise the flag on Friday nights for 50 years at Redmen football games.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Rick) Horn of Bellevue; granddaughter, Erica (James) Allen of Bellevue; three great-grandchildren, J.R., Jacob, and Joshua; and special friends, Karen Pelton, staff, and residents of Extended Family Assisted Living in Bellevue.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Foos and Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue where the Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 231 E. Center Street, Bellevue. Burial and military honors will follow in York Chapel Cemetery.
Memorials in Elwood's honor can be made to Extended Family Assisted Living or Immaculate Conception School.
