Merle "Mac" L. McConkey, 83, of Bellevue, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at his home.
He was born July 11, 1929, in Norwalk, the son of L.D. and Olive (Bowen) McConkey.
Merle was a 1947 graduate of Norwalk High School. He served in the United States Air Force in Germany from 1950-1952. He was employed at American Baler until his retirement in 1992.
Merle was a member of First United Methodist Church, Bellevue, American Legion Post 1238 and the Bellevue Elks Lodge 1013 where he served as Past Exalted Ruler. Mac was a sports enthusiast. He was an avid golfer, and officiated basketball and football games for many years. He also volunteered at The Bellevue Hospital and Fish & Loaves Emergency Food Pantry. He cherished his monthly breakfast in Norwalk with his fellow classmates from the Class of 1947.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty (Homan), whom he married Oct. 18, 1950, at First United Methodist Church, Norwalk; two sons, Michael (Val), of Perrysburg, and Steven (Sheri), of Findlay; daughter, Shelia Pastor, of Montrose, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, Timothy, Michelle, Taylor, Amanda, Jacob, Rachel, and Shara Lynn; and seven great-grandchildren, Cole, Paige, Caden, Jackson, Eastin, Mason, and Griffin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 2-8 p.m. at Foos and Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue, where an Elks Memorial Service will begin at 6 p.m.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 901 Northwest St., Bellevue, Ohio 44811. Burial with military honors will follow at Bellevue City Cemetery.
