NORWICH - Matteo (Matt) Joseph Scalaro, 85, of Norwich entered into eternal life on Tuesday, June 3,2014, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1928, in Norwich, the son of the late Matteo and Sarah (Sammatero) Scalaro, Sr. Matt served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1948. He was united in marriage to Prudence (Morosini) on Feb. 3, 1951, at St. Mary Church in Greenville. Matt was employed by the U.S. Civil Service, working at the commissary as a meat cutter at the U.S. Submarine Base in Groton as well as Shop Rite Supermarket. He was a communicant of SS. Peter & Paul Church where he served as an usher. Matt was a member of the Norwich Elks, VFW Post 104 in Taftville and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He was an active member of the United Italian Society of Norwich.
Besides his beloved wife of 63 years, he is survived by five children and their spouses, Janice Czikowsky, of Norwich, Beverly and Joseph Razzano, of Chantilly, Va., Peter and Donna Scalaro, of Berlin, Mary Ann and Stephen Cornell, of Brimfield, Mass., and Matthew and Jennifer Scalaro, of Bernardsville, N.J. He is also survived by a brother, Antonio Scolaro and his wife, Tina, of Norwich.
Additionally, Matt is survived by 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, Epifiano, and Augustino Scalaro; and three sisters, Irene Jarry, Mary Batten and Nellie MacDonald; and two grandchildren
Funeral arrangements were handled by Labenski Funeral Home in Norwich, on Saturday, June 7. Interment will be at a later date. Matt was a strong supporter of Catholic education, therefore in lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Community Foundation of Greater New Britain for the Matteo J. Scalaro Fund for Catholic Education. Donations can be mailed to 74A Vine St., New Britain, Connecticut 06052.
