Lt. Col. John Robert Fullerton, USAF (Retired), 87, of Heber Springs, Ark., died peacefully at home on Sept. 29, 2013.
He was born Jan. 23, 1926, to Bealer Reece and Vearlie (Crownover) Fullerton in Damascus, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Patrick Martin Fullerton; his brother, James "Jimmy" Fullerton; and sisters, Sara Jane Fullerton and Mary Ellen Mayberry.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nellie (Creason) Fullerton; his sons: Larry Wayne (Susan) Fullerton, John Steven Fullerton, and Daniel Brian Fullerton; grandchildren: Lizz (Dale) Shepherd, Eric Fullerton, Lindsey (Jason) Schanbacher, Martin Daniel Fullerton, Neville Thompson Fullerton, Dashel Stone Fullerton; and great-grandchildren: Arianna, Miranda, and Leo Fullerton. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Gray; nieces, Janet Gray and Tammy Necessary; nephew, Todd Mayberry; and other relatives and his many friends.
John joined the Navy at age 16 during WWII
and later earned a commission in the U.S. Air Force
. He was a Special Weapons officer serving in Germany, HQ/USEUCOM in Paris, France, Vietnam, Korea, and NORAD. After he "retired", he worked for State Parks in developing new parks, the Office of Emergency Services, and then several years with FEMA. He loved gardening, travel, and spending time with his family. He will live on in our hearts.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. in the Heber Springs Funeral Home Chapel.
